The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (DofE)

A prestigious programme that develops young people and opens doors to their future

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (DofE) is a globally recognised educational programme under the patronage of the British royal family. It is designed for young people aged 14 to 24 and focuses on their personal growth, skills development and meaningful use of free time. The programme was founded more than 60 years ago in the United Kingdom on the initiative of Prince Philip and has since inspired over 8 million young people in 140 countries worldwide. Each year, more than 1.3 million participants take part.

How does the programme work?

Participants set their own goals and work regularly in three areas:

  • Sport (development of physical fitness),
  • Skills (development of personal interests and abilities),
  • Volunteering (supporting the community).

The programme also includes an adventurous expedition,during which young people work in teams to overcome challenges in nature and learn cooperation. The programme lasts a minimum of six months and is divided into three levels – Bronze, Silver and Gold.

The DofE programme is about overcoming personal limits and perseverance in achieving individual goals. During the programme, young people learn independence, responsibility, communication and teamwork. The experience gained supports them in further study as well as in employment – prestigious universities such as Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge actively support applicants holding this certificate.

In the 2016/2017 school year, our school joined the DofE programme. For the first time, students were given the opportunity to work on their development within an internationally recognised and awarded system. Every young person has the chance to succeed – regardless of their background or academic results. The programme is open to all who are willing to work on themselves and learn new things.

In recognition of their efforts, participants receive a prestigious certificate with worldwide validity, which they may use when applying to universities or seeking employment.
