Hello, GYMES students!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It is a great honour for me to have the opportunity to say a few words to you and briefly present my story. My name is Jakub Luk\u010do and I was a student at GYMES from September 2013 to June 2018. Physically, however, I only started attending school from the second year, as during my first year I was still studying and living with my whole family in Ireland. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Our class was so wonderful that we could not have just one class teacher. No one wanted to keep that joy to themselves, so Mrs Pop\u00edkov\u00e1, Mrs Brezov\u00e1 and Mr Hric all took turns as our class teachers. Each of them was different and exceptional, but I cannot help mentioning especially the final two years we spent with Mr Hric. I do not think I would be exaggerating if I said that those two years were the most beautiful of our entire time at school. After the first years of getting used to one another, we became much closer as a group. During that time I met many amazing people with whom I shared countless wonderful moments, which led to the creation of precious relationships and friendships. These friendships continue to this day and I am very grateful to my classmates for all the memories, laughter and even tears we experienced together, and for their presence in moments when I needed it the most. Although our paths have diverged and we now live our lives in different parts of the world, there is something that still connects us regardless of distance, time or profession. Only with the passing of time have I been able to fully realise the value of that bond.<\/span><\/p>\n

After successfully completing my leaving examinations in 2018, I continued to the Faculty of Aeronautics in Ko\u0161ice, where I spent the first three years studying air traffic control. In other words, training to become an air traffic controller. I obtained my bachelor\u2019s degree in 2021 and also received the dean\u2019s award for academic achievement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

For my master\u2019s studies I moved into a more management-oriented programme in air transport management, which I successfully completed in June 2023. However, my dream, the one I had lived for and believed in tirelessly since the age of fifteen, was something quite different. I had always been fascinated by enormous metal tubes capable of transporting several hundred people over great distances at incredible heights of up to eleven kilometres and speeds exceeding nine hundred kilometres per hour. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Yes, you guessed correctly. This dream was born during my time at GYMES, and I adapted my life and decisions to it, from choosing subjects for my leaving examinations to selecting my university and shaping my overall approach to life and responsibilities. Without mathematics, physics and English I would hardly have managed the theoretical examinations required for obtaining a commercial pilot\u2019s licence. My university studies gave me a valuable overview of the world of aviation and possible alternative paths in case my dream did not succeed.\nMy first introductory flight in a small Slovak-made aircraft, the Viper SD4, took place at Bidovce airport. From that day on I was one hundred per cent certain about what I wanted to do in life. I recorded my first flight in an empty logbook on 30 March 2019, and on 10 July 2019 I completed my first solo flight without an instructor on board. I obtained my private pilot licence in November 2019 and continued accumulating the flight hours required for additional qualifications and ratings.\nDuring those hours I had the opportunity to show Slovakia from above to many family members, friends and also people who purchased sightseeing flights from Bidovce airport. I even had the honour of flying several passengers who had never flown in an aircraft before.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>

As part of this flying experience I visited many interesting places and met many wonderful people. The highlight was a navigation flight to Zadar in Croatia, which I completed with a good friend and fellow university student. I also had the opportunity to fly Mari\u00e1n \u010cekovsk\u00fd and his colleagues several times when they needed to shorten their travel time between Ko\u0161ice, Bratislava and Prague. Around this time I also began preparing for the theoretical examinations required for a commercial airline pilot licence. These consisted of fourteen subjects with more than fifteen thousand questions in total. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

My personal life during this time was fairly simple. It consisted of time devoted to university, my girlfriend, part-time work, flying, studying for pilot theory exams and going to the gym. Leisure and time with friends were often pushed aside. The goal, however, was clear, and I knew that if I wanted to fulfil my dream, I would have to sacrifice many things. In March 2022 I asked my now wife to marry me, and after her positive answer another task was added to the list: planning a wedding.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

My flight training culminated in Tren\u010d\u00edn in the summer of 2022. After successfully completing the theoretical airline pilot examinations with an average of 93 per cent, I finished my commercial pilot licence and obtained the additional ratings required to fly in all weather conditions and on multi-engine aircraft. At last I held the licence in my hands. Yet even that did not guarantee anything, because aviation can be very harsh towards applicants without previous experience, which was exactly my situation. From the very beginning, however, I trusted God completely and believed that if He wanted me to become a pilot, it would happen regardless of the circumstances. There were many variables beyond my control: medical examinations, finances for training, future employment and so on. Only through complete trust in Him was I able to go through all these steps with inner peace. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Before sending my CV to all available job advertisements for inexperienced pilots across Europe, I completed a short training course in Budapest focused on cooperation in a two-person cockpit. After that there was nothing left but to wait and hope. My fianc\u00e9e and I had just started our final year at university, the wedding was approaching and there were many unanswered questions.\nAfter about a month I received the first response to my application. I was invited for an interview in Dublin, Ireland. With God\u2019s help I successfully passed the demanding selection process, and then I had to wait again. The response came after a few days, but it included one condition: I would have to pay for a type-rating qualification that required a very large financial investment. At that time, after paying for all previous training, this was simply impossible for me. But God took care of everything in an amazing way. Exactly two days later I received another call from Dublin saying that a place had opened in a subsidiary company with much more favourable financial conditions and a high probability of a future base in Vienna. I will never forget that evening. The impossible suddenly became reality.\nThe start date at the new company was set for 6 March 2023. By then I still had to finish my master\u2019s thesis, and I am very grateful to the Faculty of Aeronautics for accommodating me and approving an individual study plan so that I could complete my type-rating training. From March onwards I divided my time between Vienna, Dublin and Ko\u0161ice. Those months until June were the most demanding period of my life so far.\nI successfully completed the final simulator examination for the Airbus A320 on 22 May in Dublin. Two days later, on 24 May, I defended my master\u2019s thesis at the Faculty of Aeronautics in Ko\u0161ice. On 26 May 2023 I completed my first flight on an Airbus A320 in Maribor, Slovenia. Every new pilot must complete six landings with an empty aircraft before flying with passengers for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

A few weeks later, however, another day surpassed all others: the day of our wedding. After eight years together my wife and I married in the presence of the most important people in our lives. We moved to Bratislava, where my wife found a job at a law firm. I love my work as an airline pilot and every day I look forward to new places, new people and new experiences. No two days are the same and there is still so much I need to learn before I can one day become a captain. It is worth mentioning that invitations to interviews from other airlines arrived only later, one after six months and another after fourteen months. That is why I value the opportunity I received even more and realise that it was not something to be taken for granted. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In July 2024 our lives changed completely with the birth of our son. We became parents, and the list of responsibilities grew significantly. At the same time our joy multiplied many times over and life gained a completely new dimension and meaning. There is nothing more beautiful than holding your own child in your arms beside the person you love. Watching my wife during childbirth, I noticed an interesting parallel between my journey towards my dream and her journey towards bringing new life into the world. Both involved great effort, sacrifice and self-denial. On the path towards a higher goal there is always some form of suffering and sacrifice. This leads me to the philosophy of life that guides me: by taking up our cross each day and following Jesus, we can reach higher goals in life, and ultimately the highest one, eternal life in heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In conclusion, I would like to emphasise that I do not stand behind this successful story alone. Only a very small part of it belongs to me. The greatest inspiration in this story is God Himself, who gave me life, intellect, family, health and all the character traits and qualities that shaped my path. My wife is also an inspiration, because she sacrificed a great deal and was always my safe place during the most difficult moments. A large part of my success also belongs to my parents, who gave me values, upbringing and support, and who contributed financially to my training. Other family members and friends also helped me in many ways. Being a pilot is wonderful, but I know that in life I have even more important vocations: being a husband and a father. Ultimately it will be on the basis of these roles that the true success of my story will be judged.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>

Was there any teacher at GYMES who inspired you or significantly influenced you?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mrs Luk\u00e1\u010dov\u00e1 influenced me greatly. I had mathematics with her in my second year and later also attended her physics seminar. I will always remember the moment when she told us during a physics lesson that she did not need to remember a specific formula because she could derive it herself. That completely changed my approach to learning. I realised that if I truly understood a topic, I would hardly need to memorise anything. I still use this approach today.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What did you think was unnecessary at GYMES but later found useful in life?<\/span><\/b>\u00e9<\/span><\/b>, no vyu\u017eil si to v \u017e<\/span><\/b>ivote?<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The mathematics seminar on limits, derivatives and integrals in my final year. I would not say I considered it completely unnecessary at the time, but I certainly did not expect it to be so useful. For anyone planning to study a technical field at university, I highly recommend this subject, if it still exists. At university it saved me a great deal of time because I already understood the basics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which achievement at GYMES outside the classroom are you most proud of?<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Winning the futsal tournament in 2019, when we played as alumni. If I remember correctly, I managed to score quite a few goals that day. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What was the greatest challenge you overcame during your studies, and what did it bring into your life?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span>The very beginning, when I returned from Ireland to a completely new class and lost the group I had previously known. However, that step ultimately shaped my entire life. I learned to be flexible, to adapt and to respond to circumstances that I cannot always control. In fact, that is exactly what my work in the cockpit requires today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

How did you perceive the atmosphere at school during your studies? <\/strong><\/p>\n

I could clearly see the determination of the former headmistress, Mrs De\u010dov\u00e1, to do things differently. I had been used to a more Western style of education that focused more on practical experience than on memorisation and copying notes, which was still very common in Slovakia at that time. Teachers dictating notes, students memorising them at home and being examined the next day.\nI really appreciated that in many subjects teachers tried to teach more interactively and in a more engaging way, offering students more than just notebooks full of notes. They encouraged us to think and to solve problems. I also remember a meeting between students who had experience studying abroad and the headmistress. She asked us how things worked in foreign schools, and it was clear that she wanted to change the old established system. I respected that attitude very much.<\/p>\n

If you could return to school for one day, which day would it be and why? <\/strong>by <\/strong>\u0161koly na jeden de\u0148, ktor\u00fd de\u0148 by to bol a\u00a0pre\u010d<\/strong>o?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Definitely the day of our school ball. It was the culmination of our entire time at school. I have heard from many people that we had one of the best programmes ever. We all enjoyed that day to the fullest. We spent many hours preparing it, and seeing the smiling faces of our parents, teachers, relatives and friends gave us a tremendous sense of joy and fulfilment. The preparation also brought us much closer together as classmates. We discovered that when there is determination and a motivated team, everything is possible. It was truly a beautiful day.<\/p>\n

What advice would you give to current GYMES students?<\/strong>tudentom<\/strong> GYMESu<\/strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most precious resource we have is time. Therefore think very carefully about where and in whom you invest it. The course of your entire life will depend on that investment.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>
