My name is Michal Luk\u00e1\u010d and I graduated from GYMES in 2023 in Mrs Ivana Va\u013ekov\u00e1\u2019s class. During my studies, I spent most of my time with the boys from the school radio station R\u00e1dio \u0160ok and with the group around the association Teologick\u00e9 kapu\u010d\u00edno. Those were beautiful and important years.<\/p>\n

At present, I am studying Philosophy and Economics at Masaryk University in Brno. I liked the PPE programme, Politics, Philosophy and Economics, which is offered at many foreign universities, but I wanted to stay in our region, so I put the combination together myself, so to speak, by hand. I chose Masaryk University precisely because of the possibility of combining subjects. So far, I have been studying with excellent academic results. In the future, I would probably like to continue on an academic path, in whatever form life may bring it.<\/p>\n

At the same time, ever since secondary school I have been working as a columnist for the daily Postoj and the magazine Nov\u00e9 mesto. I write mainly about current social and cultural events. I had wanted to do this work since childhood, which is why I am very grateful to these media outlets for their trust and for the opportunity. I also collaborate with the philosophical-theological Thomistic Institute Slovakia. I am likewise involved in Catholic apologetics on social media.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

In my free time, I work in catechesis with young adults in the Brno community Jakub\u010dat\u00e1. We do not want this university community to become something like a Catholic organiser of balls and volleyball events, and so, together with other young people, we often invite priests, theologians and other guests to help us grow further in our understanding of the faith.<\/p>\n

I enjoy reading books and essays, listening to music, watching films, going for walks and writing. So in a way I am paid to do my hobbies, which is a great blessing. I also play guitar in the excellent pop-rock band The 55, which was formed, where else, but at GYMES.<\/p>\n

In the words of the late Pope Francis, my life goal could be expressed as being rooted and open at the same time. My roots are provided by my large family, my girlfriend and my friends, from whom I feel strong support and a sense of security. My greatest certainty in life, however, comes from the invaluable spiritual, cultural and intellectual wealth of the Catholic faith.<\/p>\n

As for openness, I feel close to the ideas of Focolare spirituality, which emphasises the importance of sincere dialogue with other people, even when we disagree with them. In fact, that is also why I am glad to be studying in a secular environment, because it allows me to understand ways of thinking outside the Christian bubble more deeply.<\/p>\n

I am also sympathetic to the spirituality of Opus Dei, which emphasises sanctifying the world around us through the faithful fulfilment of everyday duties in the awareness of our divine sonship. I hope that by this \u201clittle way\u201d I will attain the title that matters to me most of all: \u201cSaint\u201d before my name.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

How did you perceive the atmosphere at school during your studies?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I know it may sound like a clich\u00e9 from the promotional materials of most Catholic schools, but I would genuinely describe the atmosphere during my time at GYMES as family-like. Through various activities such as teambuilding, tutoring and similar things, the school deliberately worked to help us build relationships both within year groups and across them, and it succeeded in doing so.<\/p>\n

Personally, I found most of my friends at school outside my own class. In some matters, older students helped me, while in others I helped younger ones. In most cases we also had good relationships with the teachers. Not friendships, but respectful and pleasant relationships.<\/p>\n

I only truly understood what that meant when I experienced my first Christmas at university. Here you do not really feel that Christmas is approaching. You just have to finish the last coursework, seminars and requirements as quickly as possible, and then goodbye, see you during the exam period.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>

Suddenly I realised what a gift it had been to experience such things communally at GYMES, whether through concerts, Holy Masses or even just small things such as taking a group photo by the Christmas tree. So I miss that a little, but I am glad that I have something to miss, that such an atmosphere really was present at GYMES.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

How did you choose your seminars and your future direction at GYMES?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I always knew that I was more inclined towards the humanities, and they naturally interested me more. Originally, I wanted to study law, so I chose the typical humanities combination of history, civics and German. So the choice was essentially intuitive.<\/p>\n

Looking back, it was an excellent choice. I probably do not need to explain civics, given my study of philosophy and my interest in social affairs, but history also helps me greatly in my current studies.<\/p>\n

In philosophy, it is useful to know the historical circumstances in which particular ideas emerged, because they are often influenced precisely by surrounding events. For example, Thomas Hobbes\u2019s cynical view of the state before the \u201csocial contract\u201d as a war of all against all grew out of his experience of a bloody civil war.<\/p>\n

As for economics, I could not praise my secondary school history lessons highly enough, because in studying economic history, where it is necessary to understand a broad historical context across several continents at once, I made use of what I had learned in secondary school almost constantly.<\/p>\n

I especially appreciated two things. It is striking that many people learn history in separate chapters, so they can perfectly recite the history of the USA, France, Germany or Japan. But if you ask them what was happening in Europe during the American Revolution and how it was connected, they freeze. Yet history is not a series of isolated parallel stories, and \u201cparallel\u201d histories inevitably influence one another. Great emphasis was placed on this in our history lessons. We were taught to think in connections.<\/p>\n

The second thing is that we also covered events in the second half of the twentieth century in relatively considerable detail. That is not a given, even though this part of history most directly shapes current events. I appreciated that too when studying economics.<\/p>\n

Which school activity or project was the most unforgettable for you and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Writing and presenting my year paper, something that younger year groups will probably no longer experience because of the rise of generative artificial intelligence. As my topic, I chose the relationship between Catholic thought and the development of economic science, especially in relation to ideas close to the Austrian School.<\/p>\n

I was surprised by how many roots of modern economic thought can already be found in traditional Catholic thinking. For example, the thirteenth-century Franciscan Pierre de Jean Olivi and later scholastic thinkers from the School of Salamanca brought into economics theories of value that were centuries ahead of their time. I do not even need to mention the contribution of Saint Thomas Aquinas, for instance in his defence of private property and his description of its limits.<\/p>\n

It certainly was not my intention at the time, but it is amusing to look back and realise that in this paper I was already connecting the very two disciplines that I now study. A very similar interdisciplinary dialogue was also pursued by another Michal with Slovak roots, the American Catholic philosopher and economist Michael Novak, whose four grandparents were from Slovakia. He has since died, but he remains a very inspiring figure for me.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

What did you think was unnecessary at GYMES, but later found useful in life?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Honestly, subjects such as biology and chemistry. Nowadays I think that no knowledge acquired at grammar school is unnecessary in the true sense of the word. After all, you need a basic overview of other disciplines too. In today\u2019s interdisciplinary age, what if something arises in your field that relates to another science? For example, if a philosopher wants to untangle a difficult moral dilemma connected with bioethics, they certainly need a basic understanding of the phenomena or procedures involved.<\/p>\n

But studying these subjects was beneficial in another way besides content. Since they did not come naturally to me, I had to sit down and study them properly. Subjects such as biology and physics therefore gave me invaluable habits of discipline and concentration, which I use every day at university.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>

Which moment at school do you consider a turning point in your personal or professional growth?<\/strong><\/p>\n

That I became involved, beyond ordinary studies, in the Great Works Academy programme. I no longer remember completely precisely, but I think it was within this programme that we read The Idea of a University by John Henry Newman, the great convert to the Catholic faith. His ideas about the university as an institution intended above all to educate virtuous citizens completely reshaped my expectations of higher education.<\/p>\n

I stopped seeing university as something valuable only in a utilitarian sense, as merely a means of getting a well-paid job, and I began to regard practical wisdom as something valuable in itself. In the end, that gave me the courage to study such a supposedly \u201cuseless\u201d subject as philosophy. Roger Scruton would no doubt remind us here that the value of such useless things is demonstrated precisely by the fact that they are \u201cuseless\u201d, that we do them for no other end.<\/p>\n

And last but not least, it was during this programme that I met my current girlfriend. We uncovered our minds to one another and fell in love with them. That too can be considered a turning point in my personal life.<\/p>\n

Have any of your friendships from GYMES lasted until today?<\/strong><\/p>\n

That is an excellent question, because I also wanted to speak about it in connection with the atmosphere at school. In my view, one of the best testimonies to, or proofs of, the atmosphere I described is precisely the fact that I am still friends with several people from school, and I am not afraid at all to speak of them as my closest friends.<\/p>\n

That group of boys and girls was formed already during secondary school, when we said to one another that we wanted to get to know each other better even outside the academic environment, and so we began meeting about once a month, always at someone\u2019s home, with each of us preparing different food.<\/p>\n

Today nothing external really binds us anymore. Almost all of us are already graduates, and I am friends with only a few people who are still at GYMES. Yet despite that, we alumni still meet whenever we get the chance. I have already grown used to the fact that when I come home for the holidays, I need to set aside time to meet at least some members of my secondary school group.<\/p>\n

These are precious friendships because they fulfil C. S. Lewis\u2019s idea of friendship as an institution whose members are not chosen in advance on the basis of rational calculation. Rather, we come together spontaneously through some shared trait or interest, and only within that relationship, not before it, does our bond deepen.<\/p>\n

That is exactly how it is with my group. In fact, we are not even interested in the same things. No one from my secondary school group apart from me studies a humanities subject. Our friendships hold together because we can be authentic in front of one another, we share similar values and we know how to talk to each other.<\/p>\n

When I was little, I used to read the Famous Five series by Enid Blyton, in that old edition with the shiny gold title. As a child, I was rather solitary, and I always wanted to have a group like the one in those books. Now I do, and an even larger one. Thank you, GYMES.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

What advice would you give to current students?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When something is offered, take it. Get involved in the opportunities that are offered within lessons, extracurricular activities, competitions, courses and excursions. Looking back, you will realise that almost everything will be useful in some way. And those opportunities will not come again.<\/p>\n

Build relationships. Do not treat school as a distribution window for diplomas, but as a community of mostly very similar people who have something to give you. Speak to people, meet them outside school as well. And one extra point: if you like a girl, simply speak to her. When you look at the payoff matrix of possible scenarios, you realise that the potential gains greatly outweigh the potential losses. Staying silent is an economically irrational choice.<\/p>\n

Pray, even when it seems to you that you do not have time for it. And even when objectively you do not have time for it. Your days will suddenly begin to flow in a different rhythm and you will live daily reality with a stronger awareness of God\u2019s presence. One of the best habits I deliberately built up at grammar school is that on Sundays I never study or work. Sunday is only God, me and Christ in other people. Sunday keeps me sane and always reminds me that I am not a cog in the machine of the economic system, but through faith in Jesus Christ I am a beloved son of God.<\/p>\n

And above all, do not treat grammar school merely as a provisional stage of life while you wait for something better to arrive. Do not spend your days in the past or the future. The only moment that is truly yours in the fullest sense is right now. As the great philosopher Master Oogway said: \u201cYesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.\u201d<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>
